I just bought a new computer. How do I take the program off my old computer and put it on the new one?

Any time you want to remove the program from a computer you need to call and un-register the computer first. You will be given a confirmation number at that time. This eliminates any confusion of how many systems you have running.

You will need to download a Complete version on the new computer or install your latest Field Data Rating CD and then run Internet Update to receive the current rates. Once the updates have been loaded you can call to register. 877-77-FIELD.

Current Field Data subscribers can download the complete version. Click here to request download information.

If you want to move your client database to the new computer, please see the instructions for backing up the client database below.

How do I cancel my service?

Field Data service involves the license and use of software. In order to cancel the Field Data service the software must be "un-registered". This is a process that issues a cancellation number for your records. Unless all computers on the account are unregistered we assume the software is still being used.

Please call our office while at your computer so we can unregister your programs. Your service will remain active until you do so. 805-522-9629.

We cannot cancel your service by email.

In the event a computer cannot be unregistered we can stop future billing on the account, however no credit will be issued for services already billed.

I am not getting notified of updates or I am getting an error when I try to run an Internet Update.

1. If you have a firewall please make sure it is configured to allow Field Data Internet Update access to the Internet. Also see Configuring Your Firewall

2. Field Data Update check must be running. To check, go to the Task Manager by pressing Ctrl, Alt, and Delete at the same time. Go to the Applications tab. You should see Field Data Update Check running. If it is running and you are connected to the Internet the problem is likely a firewall.

If Update check is not running, verify that it is located in your Startup folder (under the Programs menu). If it is there, restart your computer and you should receive an update notification next time you connect to the Internet. If Update Check is not located in your Startup folder click here.

Can I merge my quotes from my laptop with the quotes on my Desktop?

Database Merge will synchronize separate Field Data databases. A wizard will guide you through exporting items from one database to a file called FDExport.xml. Please make note of the name and location you save the file to. Then you will take that file to another computer (either through a CD/Diskette or through a network) and use the wizard to import the file. This feature requires Internet Explorer 6.0 or higher.

Instructions:

  1. Open Field Data Rating and go to the Options screen.
  1. Click Database Merge.
  2. Make note of the name and location of the Export file you are creating. You will need this information when you are ready to import to the other computer.
  3. Follow the steps to export your data.
  4. Move the Export file to the other computer.
  5. Repeat steps 1-2 on the computer you are importing to.
  6. This is where you will need to know the location of the Export file. Follow the steps to import your data.

How do I back up my client database?

You can find out where your database is located by clicking Options in the Field Data program. The location is displayed on the Options screen.

Depending on the size of your database, you have several backup options.

If your database is under 1,380 KB then you can put it on a 3.5" floppy disk.

Open Windows Explorer (or My Computer)

Open the C: drive

Open the FDIW folder

Open the Database folder

Do you see the file ca_data or ca_data.mdb? There should be a date and size listed. If not click View, then click details.

Is the size less than 1,380 KB? If the answer is YES then you can put it on a 3.5" disk. Proceed with instructions below. - If the answer is No, you will have to use another backup method.

Copying the database to a 3.5" disk (A: drive)

Open the C: drive

Open the FDIW folder

Open the Database folder

Right click on the file ca_data or ca_data.mdb

Click Copy

Open the A: drive

Click Edit, then click paste

To put it on the new computer, follow the same steps but copy from the A: drive and paste into C:\FDIW\Database.

Other backup methods:

1. Use Microsoft backup, located under Accessories - System Tools. Note: Do not use this method if you are backing up from a Windows 95 or 98 operating system.

2. Email your database to another email account. From the new computer, open the email and save the attachment to your C:\FDIW\Database directory.

3. Use a backup device such as a zip drive, tape drive, or writeable CD ROM drive. This device must be on the computer you are removing Field Data from.

4. Use our backup program, developed especially for backing up your Field Data Database to a floppy disk. Backup to Floppy.

When I try to enter the program I get the message, "The program has expired".

This message can mean 1 of 2 things:

  1. The program is not updated with current rates

  2. Your computer's date is incorrect

First, check the date on your computer. If it is correct you need to load the latest update from Field Data. It is likely that you are missing more than one update. Make sure you run Internet Update to ensure rating accuracy.

When I try to print a Life illustration on my laser printer it only prints the first page.

Many laser printers don't have enough memory to handle the printing of complex documents like our Life illustrations. Some manufacturers offer drivers that will fix the problem. Please contact your printer manufacturer to see if there is a driver available.
